A good dump pouch is an essential piece of kit. It’s a multi-purpose utility pouch that can hold magazines, ammo, secured evidence, flex cuffs, hearing protection, binoculars, night vision, water bottles, and more. Its uses are practically endless.
A dump pouch is a must-have to hold shells or spent magazines at shotgun or carbine classes. Not only does a dump pouch protect magazines from damage when dumped, there are also sound tactical reasons for carrying a dump pouch.
This is underscored by an event that happened during the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia. Faced with an overwhelming force of heavily armed Somalis, a small group of U.S. soldiers was forced into a tactical withdrawal under fire. When reloading, they simply dropped their empty mags. Running low on ammo, they called for airdrop resupply. When the ammo finally arrived, the soldiers found they no longer had sufficient magazines in which to load it.
Having established the need for a dump pouch, the next question is which one? There are a lot of dump pouches to choose from. It seems that every manufacturer of tactical nylon has come out with its own version. Some are practical, some not so much. While there are a lot of great options, I decided on the Maxpedition #0208 Rollypoly™ Folding Dump Pouch. I didn’t want a large bag flopping around, yet wanted adequate storage when I needed it. The compact footprint sold me on the Rollypoly.
The Rollypoly is Maxpedition’s licensed adaptation of the milspec MM Folding Dump Pouch design. It takes up very little belt space. The #0208 (Medium) Rollypoly, which I ordered, is 3 inches long x 3 inches wide x 1.75 inches thick when rolled up. Empty weight is only 0.3 pounds.
When deployed, the Rollypoly measures 6 inches wide x 8 inches deep. It’s designed to hold seven stacked 30-round M16 mags either vertically or horizontally. I was able to easily fit eight 30-round GI M4 mags in the pouch.
Want a bigger or smaller dump pouch? Maxpedition has got you covered with its smaller #0207 Mini Rollypoly™ and larger #0209 Mega Rollypoly ™ Folding Dump Pouches. The Mini and the Mega have all the features of the #0208 Rollypoly. The Mega has a removable leg strap.
A dump pouch needs to have an unobstructed opening for fast dumping. It also needs to prevent the contents from falling out when on the move. While these two requirements may seem contradictory, the design of the Rollypoly provides a good balance between the two.
To deploy the Rollypoly, simply pull the strap on the main flap and the pouch drops down, ready for use. The flap folds down out of the way or can be employed to secure the contents of the pouch. The flap is secured by Velcro®. Shock cord and cord locks allow adjustment of the mouth of the pouch, with pulls on each side for ambidextrous use. The edges on the mouth of the Rollypoly are stiff enough to keep the pouch mouth open when the pouch is deployed. When you are done using the pouch, it simply rolls back up and is secured by the flap. Simple, easy and effective.
The materials and workmanship are top notch. The Rollypoly is constructed of 1000-Denier nylon for abrasion resistance. It’s triple polyurethane coated for water resistance. The fabric is protected from stains and grime by DuPont® Teflon® Fabric Protector. Other features include high-tensilestrength nylon webbing and high-tensile-strength composite nylon thread that’s stronger than ordinary industry-standard nylon thread. All internal seams are taped and finished. All stress points are double stitched, bartacked, or box-and-x stitched for added strength. A grommet on the bottom of the pouch provides drainage.
The Rollypoly offers multiple attachment options. It’s equipped with a belt loop that fits up to a 2.25-inch pistol belt. It also has PALS webbing for MOLLE attachment using Maxpedition three-inch TacTie™ attachments (sold separately). Tactical Tailor™ MALICE CLIPS® or BLACKHAWK!® S.T.R.I.K.E.® Speed Clips™ can also be used.
The Rollypoly is equipped with a top loop that allows it to be piggybacked using a Duraflex® Siamese SlikClip® (included). With the SlikClip, the Rollypoly can be mounted to belt loops, any one-inch webbing, a D-ring, or something similar. It’s generally recommended that dump pouches be worn on the weak-hand side. This positioning allows control of the weapon in the strong hand when using the weak hand to access the dump pouch.
Suggested retail price of the Maxpedition #0208 Rollypoly Folding Dump Pouch is $27.99. It’s available in Black, OD Green, Khaki, Foliage Green, Khaki-Foliage, Orange- Foliage, Fire-EMS Red, and Safety Yellow. All Maxpedition products are GSA compliant and covered by a limited lifetime warranty.
